Never read any of the Hopalong comics. The characterization looks closer to the Louis L'Amour type than the Mumford type.

L'Amour wanted to do the pulp magazine series in a realistic style, faithful to Mulford's original concept, but the publisher wanted to stick close to the movie version. Undoubtedly, the Fawcett comic books were also based on the movies.

Yeah, if you read the books, Hoppy more closely resembles Jimmy Cagney.
