Overlooked Radio: THE WHISTLER

Here's good timing. Just as I was fumbling around for something to slap up here on Overlooked Tuesday, my new Facebook pal Patrick Carrico posted this link to five hundred and two (!) Whistler radio shows on my page. That's HERE. Thanks Patrick. While you're listening, you may wish to admire these posters from the 1944-45 film series starring Richard Dix. I haven't seen any of these, and none appear to be on YouTube, but I've seen Dix elsewhere, and he's one of those supreme overactors who chew up the screen and spit it out at you. The radio Whistler, I'm pleased to report, is much easier to take.

The WHISTLER films weren't Too shabby, and pop up on Turner Classic Movies and a few other cable channels from time to time. The radio series could be a bit heavy-handed, but it'd usually good fun.

Another great radio series. Didn't realize there were THAT many episodes made/still available. Potentially a great property for novelization too...

I remember listening to a few of these as a kid, thought they were pretty scary, some of them. I wish there were a place to DL Sgt. Preston of the Yukon (and King, of course) as I liked that better.

I find it interesting that the radio show was only broadcast on the west coast.
Because of the sponsor, I'm told. It's really a terrific show. X/M Sattelite radio has a 24/7 old time channel 82 that plays many of these. And you're right about Richard Dix hamming it up. He's such a bad actor, he's actually fun to watch.
As Todd mentions above, TCM usually shows these movies back to back. They are worth searching out.

Joe, thanks, but that link isn't working for some reason.

Ah, but some searching found it.
