OK, here's the 1937 follow-up to Meet Nero Wolfe (featured last week), in which Walter Connolly replaced Edward Arnold, and unfortunately (by all accounts) Lionel Stander stayed on as Archie. Jon Tuska said, "The film was in no way the equal of its predecessor." Ouch. That shifty-looking guy peering over Wolfe's head on the right is Eduardo Ciannelli, who played Paul Chapin. Last week, Max Allan Collins noted that he'd heard this is almost a "lost" film. Sad, if true.
¿And the plot? by the title sounds like assasins for hire or something like that.
ReplyDeleteThe "League" is a group of guys who fear that novelist Paul Chapin is killing them off one at a time. Is he? It takes a man of Wolfe's gargantuan intellect to find out.
ReplyDeleteAs I recall, Cianelli was pretty good, but the rest of the movie just didn't ring true to Wolfe and, especially, Archie. Still, a must=-see for completists.
ReplyDeleteNice posters...very lush. If I were walking down the street and saw these I would have to plunk down a dime to see these pictures.
ReplyDeleteArt Scott must be in heaven looking at those great posters!
