The Mark of Zorro (1920)

Here are scenes from my favorite silent film, which is also my favorite Zorro movie.

Interested in Zorro, the work of Johnston McCulley or pulps in general? Take a tip from Davy and me and join the fine folks at the JohnstonMcCulley/Zorro Yahoo Group. You won't be sorry!

  1. I used to watch Zorro when I was a kid. The B&W series was shown on a Saturday morning in the UK and it was great. Can't remember the silent film version but I must look out for it. The updated film versions I'm not keen on, Katherine Zeta Jones just doesn't do it for me. Thanks.

  3. This is a spectacular film that I've watched many, many times. When folks tell me silents are boring, I encourage them to watch ZORRO.

  4. I made a comment earlier which seems to have been dropped - Blogger has been up and down this morning, apparently, so I'll try again.

I just read an article on this in the Spring 2010 issue of Ed Hulse's Blood 'N' Thunder. Great film.

  9. well, if i'm not mistaken, is when banderas go by himself to fight some soldiers. The scene where he fires a cannon while laughing.

he wears a mask like the one what wear fairbanks, and the gestures and all the stuff...

  10. Zorro. As a girl growing up watching the TV Zorro, I felt cheated. The women were such wimps! I wanted to BE Zorro, not be saved by him. I didn't see the old silent Zorro until I was in my twenties- it is the best, hands down.

  11. Jeez, R.L., that babe who sold tamales in the plaza was no wimp. She was a real spitfire. You should seek out the Lady Rawhide comics done a few years back (and collected as graphic novels). She got the best of Zorro on a regular basis.
