Actually, these guys are Lord Grandrith and Doc Caliban. They're brothers, and sons of Jack the Ripper. Farmer introduced the characters in the extremely strange novel A Feast Unknown, and brought them back for these sequels. I did not enjoy Feast at all. I think I liked these a little better, though my memory is hazy. I do like the covers, though.
Deka - sorry to answer so late. Farmer's Riverworld is an interesting concept that, in Farmer's hands, just seems to wander off into aimless efforts at clever cuteness. Like Cap'n I liked the first one OK but after that, no thanks. I started the 2nd, didn't buy any more.
A FEAST UNKNOWN was one of Philip Jose Farmer's "adult" novels. Farmer loved to pay homage to the characters he grew up reading: Doc Savage and Tarzan, Phineas Fogg, and others.
Richard R. : Don't mind. And i can understand your opinion. But the truth is i enjoyed the series. Buti must say maybe the 5th book is a bit weird. With all the tower stuff and so many characters around.
On the other hand, id we all liked the same things would be boring and worrying ;)
We have too many wordsmiths and works to worry about the quality of this or another.
I read very few of Philip José farmer work. But my opinion isvery clear: he was (and is) one of the great wordsmiths. And he loved to write about the characters he loved.
ReplyDeleteI have this Ace double.
ReplyDeleteHis Hadon of Opar and World of Tiers stuff is just outstanding. I have these too.
ReplyDeleteTarzan and Doc Savage, from the covers. I'm NOT a fan of Farmer, I read the first two of his Riverworld books and was bored.

ReplyDeleteRiverworld boring to you? Why?
ReplyDeleteHow many hours a day does it take to develop those upper bodies
ReplyDeleteI loved the first Riverworld but found the sequel disappointing.
ReplyDeleteYou'll have to ask Cap'n Bob Napier, Patti. I know no one else with such a physique.
ReplyDeleteCap, really, you should give another try. is fascinating.
