I've got a dozen of these unread. I loved the Conan stories and kept buying them, thinking I'll get to them, before I realized why I hadn't kept up. The Conan in these stories was not the Conan I loved. With that realization, I stopped picking them up and those dozen lie unread, unloved.
I think John Maddox Roberts writes - or used to - historical mysteries set in Roman times. Seems to me I saw him on a panel at Monterey Bouchercon talking about that.

ReplyDeleteRichard: You're right. i have two of his Roman mistery novels. pretty good stuff!
ReplyDeleteWhat worked really well at 50 pages, and once at 200 pages, just didn't cut it at 300-plus.
