Sure, it's only a Philo Vance movie, but with William (The Thin Man) Powell, Mary (The Maltese Falcon) Astor and a whole mess of dogs, how bad can it be?
I have seen it, on TCM, and liked it well enough, though Astor isn't any more likable here than in Falcon or any other film she was in that I've seen. I just don't understand her appeal, if she has any.

ReplyDeleteLove, love, love William Powell1
ReplyDeleteI have to watch this, if only because I have never been able to get past the first few pages of any Philo Vance book.
ReplyDeleteGreat movie and beautifully directed by Michael Curtiz too - probably the most stylish private eye movie of the decade as a result.
