Lust of the Lawless - a Complete SPICY WESTERN by Robert Leslie Bellem


Most readers of "Adult" westerns assume the concept was born back in the 70s with series like Slocum (think about it) and Longarm, the guy with the long erect cigar between his teeth. Truth is, they were around as early as 1936, when Spicy Western Stories was born. And Robert Leslie Bellem, creator of Dan Turner, Hollywood Detective, was one of the mainstays of the field. "Lust of the Lawless" is from the eighth issue, of June 1937.

A note about the cover: "Lust of the Lawless" was not actually the cover story. That honor went to "Hero of Coffin Creek", one of the long-running series of Buckner Grimes stories by Robert E. Howard's pal E. Hoffman Price (and obviously inspired by, but vastly inferior to, REH's Breckenridge Elkins tales). Price's stories are not bad (well, not really really bad), but Bellem's are usually better.

    Dan Turner is the best! I first became aware of him in humorist S.J. Perelman's short piece, SOMEWHERE A ROSCOE...(a must for Turner fans, in my opinion). I must have over 3000 pages of Turner stories from reprints and a few original pulps. A company on the web called Pulpville Press sells thick, juicy volumes (they've done at least six, may have done more but I haven't checked in a few months; volume five is about 375 pages) for only fifteen bucks plus shipping; a steal, as far as I'm concerned.

    Yeah, it's a great time to be a Dan Turner fan. Reprints have trickled in over the past 20 years, but now there's a flood. I have a couple of the Pulpville editions, and another publisher is doing something very similar.

    Evan, do you know approximately when the other publisher will be releasing their Dan Turner stuuf, or announcing it? Also, are you allowed to name the publisher, so I know where to check for announcements?

    Oops, I was wrong. I saw the three volumes called "The Case Files of Dan Turner, Hollywood Detective" on Lulu.com (and one volume on Amazon) and thought it was a competitor to Pulpville. But it's actually another Pulpville series. Now I'm confused. Their original series, called just "Dan Turner, Hollywood Detective" (these are the ones I have) is already up to volume 6. The new series is in more chronological order, and includes pulp illos. Are they repeating themselves? Are these the only stories they could get artwork for? I don't know.

    I assume you're familiar with the two collections done by Adventure House, the two by Black Dog, and the hardcover edited by John Wooley. There was also an old chapbook called "God's Gift to the Sherlock Business" and a couple of mini-pbs titled "Spicy Detective Encores". I'm probably forgetting some others.

    Price always seemed to feel he was a better writer than Howard but I certainly don't think he was. You know, I never made the Slocum connection until now. It never occurred to me.

    Okay, now I'm the one who is confused. I have just one book - an oversized trade paper, published by Adventure House in 2003, titled ROSCOES IN THE NIGHT. Subtitled "A bookful of Dan Turner stories". It has 13 stories in it, plus a forward by John Wooley. On the back cover it says "Thirteen Never Before Reprinted Classics!" It credit's illustration (note singular case) by H.J. Ward, though it appears to have the original illos throughout.

    You're saying there's a second collection by Adventure House, yes? Do the other collections you mention have some of all of the same stories?

    Yes, I'm going to go looking after I post this, but it's nice to get the info straight from the experts.

    Well. The John Wooley hardcover, titled 'Robert Leslie Bellem's Dan Turner, Hollywood Detective' was published back in 1983. The first Adventure House collection was High Adventure #60, from 2001. The saddle-stitched Black Dog Books are 'Reckoning in Red', 2001 and 'Corpse on Ice', 2003. Glancing over the titles in those (and 'Roscoes in the Night', I didn't spot any repeats, though it's possible.

    Thanks. I'm not sure if I'm more, or less confused. I seem to have found collections by other publishers. I really enjoyed the one I have (Roscoes) and would like to have/try another, but not sure if I should try more Turner, a collection of other Bellem, or what. I'll go into pondering mode.

    Adventure House also published a volume of 7 Dan Turner stories in their High Adventure series, #61. It was published in 2001, so I don't know if it's still in print, but if so, it should be easy to find on their website. This volume cost $7.95, not including shipping, and all the stories are from the January 1943 issue of Dan Turner-Hollywood Detective (if you're a newbie to Bellem, the Dan Turner character was so popular had his own pulp title for a while).

    A clarification: All the Dan Turner stories are in the public domain because Trojan never renewed them. So anyone can reprint them and there will inevitable overlapping. The other thing is that in the 40's Trojan launched Dan Turner, Hollywood Detective/Hollywood Detective which reprinted many of the earlier Dan Turner stories. I've heard that some were rewritten, perhaps to tone done the raunchiness to acceptable 40s levels.
