It doesn't bode well that McGarrett and Danno seem to be re-characterized as generic TV cop buddies with the all the gravity of wise-guy frat boys. What next, Tracy Morgan as Wo Fat?
If they're going to remix the formula, I'd have gone out of the box and cast Daniel Kim (who at least has some presence) as an Asian-American McGarrett. Grace Park is easy on the eyes, at least.
The cops in old TV shows looked like guys I knew. Wo Fat sorta resembled by best friend's dad. The guys in ADAM-12 looked like my P.E. and home room teacher. Now TV cops look like...well, guys on TV.
That new version: No friggin' way. I'll avoid it like the plague, sushi or sun-dried eel guts. Whatever. This kind of crap (the new version) was original once, but it's been so long ago I can't remember when it was. I suppose next they'll remake Peter Gunn with Iced Tea and hip-hop music. Bleah!
I was never attached to the original (except for the theme), so don't care one way or the other about the remake. The notion of a new Rockford Files, though, as discussed some time back on Ed Gorman's blog, got my fur riled up.
Have they canned the Rockford remake? I can't help but think the new character would look and act more like Richie Brockelman than Jim Rockford. (Richie got his start with Jim as you may recall.)
I don't think I'll watch the new version, Grace Park not withstanding. I like the original too much. At lest the first half dozen years. After that, it got a bit crappy.
As for the Rockford Files remake(shudder), the last I heard the pilot was in the crapper. Probably a good spot for it.
Yes...it should be noted that the original H50 was Not a classic, despite having some surprisingly good episodes...and most of those before creator/producer Leonard Freeman died (those first half-dozen years you cite, Randy), which allowed the egomanical Jack Lord to run roughshot over the production, and drive other cast members and some behind the camera folk away. I wrote a long set of comparisons between STAR TREK and HAWAII FIVE-0 once...they were improbably populous, till one started to consider the series...even down to the dynamics between characters 1, 2 and 3, the improbably small casts, and the sustained popularity.
I wouldn't be surprised if it does become CSI: HONOLULU.
OK, I hadn't seen the upfront trailer...the notion that these guys are a misfit/SWATtish detail of the state police does make at least their relative youth and sass/smartass dialog more sensible in context than the vagueness with which the orginal FIVE-O flitted back and forth as to whether they were a small subset of or the primary body of the state police.
Doesn't look great, even if Grace Park does, but I might give it a try. Low expectations might help it for me.
