Conan of Hollywoodia

  1. Let me guess. Is the Jordan book twice as long as the deCamp and Carter book?

Somewhere in between these movies, my subscription to both Conan comics lapsed, a bunch of lousy, low-budget of sword and sorcery movies came in and I read "The World According to Garp"

DeCamp and Carter weren't horrible writers (okay Carter was) but this was about the time they should've all let it stop.

  2. One wonders how the new Conan film will work. With Hollywood's record, I don't hold a lot of hope that it will resemble Howard's character.

I remember the syndicated series with a sense of horror. And not the kind you might find in a good Conan story.

  3. I think Robert Jordan is good in his own works. But his Conan pastiches are awful, sorry.

I mean: Snake men in the middle of a hiborian city? Come on! Sorry but no, thanks.

This said, I , er,, liked the first movie. As adaptation .. well. You know how it is. But have sme bits really worth imho.

Oh, and as a dirty spaniard :P The movie have a couple of scenes filmed in Cuenca. This is source of plenty of jokes with one of my brothers.

  4. Good guess, Dan. The Jordan book is twice as long.

I think I sort of liked the first movie when it came out. Saw it again last month on cable, though, and it has not aged well. I sure hope the new one will be better.

  5. Jordan's Conan books were of a much more managable length than his wheel of time tomes. I actually enjoyed a couple of them.

  6. One very good thing about the first movie: the music was great. Sometimes I watch the opening credits when it comes on tv

  7. Very few writers can successful emulate Robert E. Howard's writing. I have mixed experiences with Robert Jordan's work. I admire his vision in The Wheel of Time series, but he needed a good editor to cut out the hundreds of pages of padding.
