The OTHER James Arness

He wasn't ALWAYS Matt Dillon. Just 99% of the time.

(OK, you caught me. I couldn't resist just one Dillon pic.)

  1. Great pics, Evan. Really took me back, some of them. And I do remember L&M (named for the company, Ligget & Meyers, I believe) cigarettes, even smoked them once way long ago, along with Old Golds.

  2. Ligget or Legget? My mother smoked them when she smoked. I'd steal one occasionally, but didn't care for them. Old Golds were good, but I was a Marlborough Man. Gave up the filthy habit 30 years ago and I'm glad I did.
Last year I checked out Arness' web site and saw his then-current pictures. I barely recognized him.

  3. He was a very good actor. Haven't seen much of him in the UK since Gunsmoke but never forgotten that role.

  4. He did have a Frankenstein sort of head. Never noticed it until these pics. Maybe the cowboy hat was a good move.

  5. Rick was right, it's Ligget. When I was in 7th grade we took a field trip to the factory where L&M cigarettes were made. On the way out we all got a free pack.

  6. Wait, Rick was almost right. It's Liggett. Now we can all sleep securely tonight knowing that.

  7. I still think that part of the rift between Arness and his brother Peter Graves had its roots (ar ar) in Arness being an ambulatory carrot and Graves defeating and destroying an invading alien tuber in IT CONQUERED THE WORLD.

  8. This week's sleazy supermarket tabloid (Enguirer? Star? I don't remember which) has a cover blurb reading "The Secret James Arness Took to his Grave."
The secret? That he never forgave himself for outliving brother Peter. Sheesh.
