  1. The Shadow was very popular in pulp magazines and on radio, but Street & Smith did not seem to be confident that he could carry his own comic. They crammed in other strips: Nick Carter, Horatio Alger, Frank Merriwell, Bill Barnes, and the Avenger. Almost every character they owned who had ever starred in a dime novel or pulp magazine series.

  2. And I notice that Doc Savage, who was featured on the cover of the first three issues, is absent from these. That's no doubt because the first issue of own comic was published around the same time as Shadow #4. Doc rejoined the gang in Shadow Comics after his mag petered out in late 1943. .
