FFB: A Visual Bibliography of BILL CRIDER's Novels and Stories

If you think this is a LONG, LONG post, don't blame me. Bill's the one who wrote all this stuff.

My goal here was to present cover images of the first editions of Bill's novels, and the first appearances of his shorter works. I know there are many later printings of the novels, and later appearances of the stories, and while it would be cool to include them all here, it would probably take you a week just to look at them.

I have omitted books edited by Bill, those containing non-fiction articles, and those for which he wrote introductions. Compiling that information would certainly be a worthy endeavor, but the fiction list alone is so long it almost made my brain explode.

My thanks to Bill's four amigos James Reasoner, Steve Mertz, Cap'n Bob Napier and Richard Robinson for their help in assembling this stuff.

This bibliography is a work in progress, and I'm asking your help, particularly with the SHORT STORIES section. The bibliography on Bill's website lists short story appearances into 2001, but then stops cold. So while I've identified an amazing number of stories published in the years since, I know I'm missing some. Probably a lot

I'm no doubt missing some of the novels, too. Bill has publicly acknowledged his work on the Jack MacLane horror novels, the single Nick Carter adventure and the Rancho Diablo ebooks, but others written under house or other names lack his official stamp of approval. I'm pretty sure of those included here (in the WESTERNS and ACTION categories), either because I've found compelling evidence or been advised by those in the know (and in one case by Bill himself) of his involvement.

On top of all this, of course, I'm sure I've simply made some damn fool mistakes.

If you know of more works in any category, let me know and I'll revise this post.

Here we go!

  1. The NAMIRHA item in CROSS PLAINS UNIVERSE is actually a novel excerpt, though perhaps the novel was never finished. I am reviewing three short stories you don't have represented, and feel free to fillch images or find better ones I can steal from you...

  7. Some years back I begged Bill for a copy of that CROSS PLAINS UNIVERSE novel manuscript and he emailed it to me. Damn shame the Conan property owners gave him grief and he couldn't publish it. I reviewed it here:

  9. Good to know about the novel...they let Lin Carter spew all he can but....will look (again, I think) at that review.

"My Heart Bleeds for You" originally in 14 VICIOUS VALENTINES ed by Greenberg, Greenberg and Waugh (1988), cover up in my post...why not 13? A breaker's baker's dozen?

"Wolf Night" in WESTERYEAR ed. Gorman (1988), cover in my post

"An Evening Out with Karl" in DARK AT HEART ed. by Lansdale and Lansdale (1992), cover in my post

  11. Bill approached me in 1979 with the suggestion that we collaborate on a fanzine article about sleazy book publishers. I knew right off the bat this was my kind of a guy and we've been friends and off-&-on-again collaborators ever since...but y'know what? I never imagined how truly prolific and what range Bill had. Thanks for the hard work that went into this, Evan. A beautiful tribute to a great man and a fine writer.
