Ye olde comic books by the fifties had expanded their subject matter, hoping to gain a larger readership, no doubt. These covers are full of action and color to draw the reader.

Well, EC Comics knew they were the prime target of the attempts to "clean up" comics, and decided to test the waters with relatively sophisticated and decidedly un-lurid titles...which didn't achieve much in the way of sales, apparently. However, they had MAD to sustain them.

Note the size of the Comics Code Authority stamp on the bottom two. All in vain, though. The EC line (except Mad) was killed by Wertham and his ilk. The bastards.
