I see these issues are from 1955 which means SMASHING DETECTIVE was one of the last of the pulps. By the mid-fifties the digest era was in full bloom and all the new detective and SF titles were being published in the new digest format. The pulp era was just about dead with only a few titles left like RANCH ROMANCES, SCIENCE FICTION QUARTERLY, AND TEXAS RANGERS.

Now it appears the digest era is on the way out with very titles left like EQMM, AHMM, and the 3 SF titles: ANALOG, ASIMOV'S, and F&SF. All these magazines have low circulation figures compared to a few years ago.
