Cap Gun Monday: NICHOLS DERRINGER

This derringer was one of very few Nichols "shell firing" guns - sort of their answer to Mattel's Shootin' Shell line. This one came with three-piece bullets (a shell, a casing, and a red "pellet" tip). The red pellet was the piece that was actually propelled out of the barrel. Though the gun has two barrels, only one is hollow and functional. These days, a single three-piece bullet is worth more than the gun itself.

The most common Nichols derringer was the Dyna-Mite, at right, which did not fire a projectile. The Derringer (capital D) is about 3 3/4", while the Dyna-Mite is just over 3".  Stick around. The Dyna-Mite will get its own pictorial sometime soon.

That's a nice looking cap gun. I don't remember that one though I did have the two gun set of the Mattel shootin' shell 6-guns with leather holsters and belt. Man, I would love to have that set now. Tossed out by my folks as I grew up...

I may have had the little one. It had the white grips and fired a Greenie Stick-em cap when I bothered to use one. Do you also have the belt buckle Derringer? You push your belly out and the gun pivots forward and fires.

Yep, I had that belt buckle contraption and do again. I could still wear it if I wanted - the belt would just about fit around my leg.

Did the Nichols have white grips? I think that's what I had.

The most common Dyna-Mite had cream color grips. The Derringer was also issued in black, with white grips. That one is rarer than mine.
