In the comic book version, Doc discovered a magic hood that shot a ray from the forehead or something. Apparently, Street & Smith felt a need to jazz up the character for the comics medium. By the time they started a Doc Savage comic, their competitors were publishing characters like Superman, Human Torch, Green Lantern, and Captain Marvel.
