The Secret Agent X-9 comic strip, created by Dashiell Hammett, was illustrated by promising beginner Alex Raymond from its inception in Jan 1934 until Nov1935. Raymond's replacement was Charles Flanders, who handled the art until Apr 1938, when he took over The Lone Ranger. Then came a seven month run by Afonsky. That brings us to date - Nov 7, 1938, when Austin Briggs began an 18-month run with "The Shoe of Cinderella." Briggs also did pulp illos for Blue Book, art for numerous slick mags, and a stint on Flash Gordon.
