John Smith and Pocahontas - Together Again (sort of)

One of the highlights of our trip to Virginia was a visit to Jamestown Island. Big John Smith stands atop a towering pedestal, gazing out over Chesapeake Bay as if awaiting supply ships from England. Directly behind him is the recreated fort, utilizing some of the post holes of the original.

Pocahontas, looking considerably more grown up than she was when saving John from the chopping block, occupies a rock on the opposite side of the fort. Legend says it's good luck to shake her hand (which we did, of course). Did it work? Not so you'd notice, but we've had no recent disasters either.

The thing about the shaking of her hand reminds me many legends about rocks and saints here in Spain. Is a nice thing ^^

I'd have to take her hand too.

It worked! We're moving to Portland!

There's a large statue of a boar at Bouchard Gardens in BC, and it's supposed to be good luck to touch it's muzzle. That muzzle is shiny bright from all those touches, looks like Pocahontas' hands are too.

I spend a lot of time in northern Virginia but I seldom drift southward. I will have to remedy that with some of these sites.

There's a big brass pig at Seattle's Pike Place Market that people rub, too.

Did you see the replicas of the ships that saved the colony in 1619? The House of Burgesses? The jail where Blackbeard (or some famous pirate) was hanged? Are they still blowing glass at the fort?

Saw the ships. Got lots of pics. Saw the jail where Blackbeard's men were held. The old Capitol building (where those burgess dudes met) was pretty boring. We skipped the glassblowers, though they're still there.
